Job Description:

Responsible for the oversight and management of solutions delivery and maintenance that support Tri-State’s participation in wholesale energy markets. This includes, but is not limited to, applications supporting risk management, load forecasting, scheduling, deal capture, settlements, reporting, and resource planning, in a 24/7 environment. The manager will lead the energy applications team, work closely with other technology teams, and collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure systems meet the utility’s strategic and operational goals.

Energy Applications Services Manager

Hiring Salary Range: $140,000-$191,000

Actual compensation offer to candidate may vary outside of the posted hiring salary range based upon work experience, education, and/or skill level.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and direction to the energy applications services team, fostering a high-performance culture.

  • Manage the development, configuration, and maintenance of Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems, Energy Management Systems (EMS), historian systems, and market data analytics platforms.

  • Manage the development, configuration, and maintenance of internally developed tools and integrations supporting energy management functions.

  • Ensure smooth integration of internal applications with RTO market systems, such as day-ahead, real-time, and ancillary services markets.

  • Lead a team responsible for application support, troubleshooting, and performance optimization of market-facing software tools.

  • Oversee the compliance of software systems with RTO regulations, market rules, and security requirements.

  • Collaborate with energy traders, schedulers, and operations to ensure applications meet business needs and facilitate effective market participation.

  • Stay current with changes in RTO market rules and trends to implement necessary software updates and strategies.

  • Work with the technology and cybersecurity teams to ensure systems are secure, reliable, and available to meet market timelines.

  • Serve as a liaison between the energy marketing group, RTOs, and external software vendors to address system performance, enhancements, and compliance.

  • Partner with internal customers to develop training and deployment plans aimed at maximizing both user adoption and realization of business benefits.

  • Provide 24/7 support for real-time and critical Energy Management System functions ensuring continuous system availability and performance.

  • Measure the quality and performance of the teams' services while providing direction, coaching, and enabling a culture of excellent customer service, high-performance and trust.

  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations, such as NERC CIP, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant standards and best practices.

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of system configurations, processes, and procedures.

  • Prepare status reports and keep management, client and other stakeholders informed of project status and related issues.

  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures and attain knowledge and remain knowledgeable of regulations, laws, standards, and best practices applicable to functional area.

  • Because Tri-State has an obligation to provide continuous, reliable electric service to its customers, the ability to work overtime at any time of the day or week is considered an essential function of the job.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Qualifications:

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, electrical engineering, business, or a related field or equivalent experience gained through progressively greater responsibilities

  • An MS, MBA, or related advanced degree desired.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Nine (9) years of experience in energy markets, utility operations, or application management, or at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.

  • In-depth understanding of RTO/ISO market structures, participation requirements, and energy risk management.

Skills:

  • Experience with Energy Management Systems (EMS), ETRM platforms, and energy trading applications.

  • Strong project management skills with experience leading software development and support teams.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage stakeholders across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance, cybersecurity, and NERC Reliability Standards in the energy sector.

  • Knowledge of of FERC Standard of Conduct in energy sector.

  • Knowledge of RTO systems such as PJM, MISO, SPP, or CAISO, and experience supporting real-time market and generation management is preferred.

  • Experience with cloud-based applications and modern data architectures is preferred.

  • Certifications in project management (PMP) or IT service management (ITIL) preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to explain technology solutions in business terms; an effective listener and communicator.

  • Keen attention to detail.

  • Superior analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Willingness to travel as required for training and meetings throughout service territory.

  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
